Why Small Cells and a Solutions for cell phone coverage solutions?

Small cells provide improved cellular experience in congested urban areas and in areas just outside the cell phone tower or even in areas that have absolutely zero cell phone reception. In most cases only AT&T & Verizon offer small cells that can be added to a Distributed antenna system however T-mobile and Sprint are currently working on small cell solutions but have not come out with proper solutions for adding on to a DAS system.

There are three types of small cells: femtocells, picocells and microcells.

Microcells are the largest and most powerful small cell. They are usually installed outdoors on traffic lights or signs, and can be used temporarily for large events. Microcells have a range of under two kilometers, whereas macrocell towers can cover up to 20 miles. Both microcells and picocells are usually installed by network operators.

Femtocells have the shortest range of small-cell types, and are usually deployed in homes or small businesses. These router-like devices are installed by clients and can accommodate coverage for just a few users at a time. Femtocells generally have a maximum range of less than 10 meters.

Picocells are usually installed in larger indoor areas like shopping malls, offices or train stations. They can support up to 100 users at a time and have a range of under 200 meters.

What are Small Cells?

Small cells[1] are low-powered cellular radio access nodes that operate in licensed and unlicensed spectrum that have a range of 10 meters to a few kilometers. They are “small” compared to a mobile macrocell, partly because they have a shorter range and partly because they typically handle fewer concurrent calls or sessions. They make best use of available spectrum by re-using the same frequencies many times within a geographical area. Fewer new macrocell sites are being built, with larger numbers of small cells recognised[2][3][4] as an important method of increasing cellular network capacity, quality and resilience with a growing focus using LTE Advanced. As cell signal moves over long lengths of coax cable some is lost, reducing booster system performance. HOW THE PRO 1050 IS DIFFERENT
No other commercially available cell signal booster system uses the 1050’s unique dual-amplifier design to compensate for signal that is lost over long lengths of cable. Wilson Electronics engineers designed the system so the Pro 1050 main and the inline booster communicate. Working together the two amplifiers determine the actual signal bleed along the cable run, and supply sufficient boost to compensate for this lost signal.

In addition, the WilsonPro Pro 1050 features XDR Technology (eXtended Dynamic Range) that prevents overload conditions which can, in accordance with FCC regulations, force a booster to reduce power or even shut down.

PRIMARY HUB

The Primary Hub provides the interface to the RF sources and converts RF signals to optical and connects via fiber to either additional Hubs or Remotes. The Primary Hub features a unique internal service distribution matrix which provides flexibility in terms of how supported wireless services are routed within a system deployment. This means specific operators or frequencies can be routed to the entire system or to designated sections of the system, depending on requirements.

SECONDARY HUB

A Secondary Hub connects via a full-duplex optical link to an OpticalModule that is inserted in the front of a Primary Hub. Its purpose is to distribute an RF feed from the Primary Hub to up to 8 Remote Units. A Secondary Hub supports this full 1:8 optical expansion by default, without requiring any additional modules. Power Supply Unit (PSU) functionality for powering all of the attached Remote Units is also integrated in the Secondary Hub chassis.

The Service Modules provide the interface to the RF signal source. Up to four can be deployed in a hub, and they are hot swappable, allowing either system maintenance or the addition of operators or frequencies without disrupting service.

The Remote Unit is typically mounted above ceiling tiles or in out-of-sight locations as close as possible to the service area. It converts and amplifies the wireless signal for transmission to or from a mobile device.
